What should be my first legal six pack purchase? I want something real tasty. I don't know too much about beer, but I've had many, many makes because my brother is a bit of a fanatic, hes been brewing for 3 or 4 years as well.

Something local and seasonal.
This should always be your beer purchasing criteria.

+1 on Pancho's comment.
I have a Wine and Spirit's near me that gets local kegs in. They let you sample up to 3 different beers per visit and will fill a Growler for you for a reasonable price. I'm not a beer person, but even I have to admit some of the local and seasonal brews are rather tasty.

If you've had many beers, then you've probably worked out a good idea of what you like. What are some of your faves?

Try something imported from Yurop. We just make the best beer. Belgian, Czech or German. I don't know what is imported in US, but from what I tasted your beer is mostly pisswater.
I am a huge fan of the Hefeweizen type of beer or wheat beer in English. It is the best kind. You can also try the dark bock type.

Taste is subjective, so it's going to be hard to recommend something you would like. I am kind of partial to this:
Avoid this skunkpiss like the plague:

Agree with Pancho. Find a local brewery get a sampler of what they make and try several. You should find something you like.
![]() 10/21/2013 at 16:19 |

Many grocery stores now allow you to buy sampler six packs. Pick six different beers and try new things.

You'd think right? I really don't know what flavors correspond with what types of beer. I'm not into super hoppy or bitter beers, although that style has been growing on me slightly. I like citrus/fruit blends, some stouts are good, lagers I think I like. What are some of your favorites?
![]() 10/21/2013 at 16:23 |

Some liquor stores allow you to mix and match your own six pack. See if one in your area allows this and try to get a good variety. Figure out what you like.

Not sure if i've had Arrogant Bastard, I've had two rogues, one I liked, one not so much, can't for the life of me remember what they were called.

Also, now is my favorite time of year for seasonal beers.
Pumpkin (this is a very good beer if you get a good brew, and a very bad one if you get a bad brew. If you have Shipyard in your area, by far the best)
Octoberfest -I'd say Sam Adams
Ciders - While not really a beer, they always seem to taster better this time of year. I would suggest Woodchuck.

Wise words Pancho.

I'm also not a fan of overhopped beers. I like a clean, malty flavor or a light easy drink.
If you enjoy the citrus/fruity beers, I'd recommend Shock Top to start off. Goes great with/without orange (better with it). Wheat beers (Hefeweisens) are some of the best crispy, citrusy beers. I did have a Blue Moon pumpkin seasonal the other day that was pretty damn tasty too. Not a ton of pumpkin with a decent bit of clove.
As far as lagers go, can't really help you there. I'm more of an ale guy :)

If you live in the northeast, try to find this:
Baby Tree from Pretty Things Brewery. Pay no attention to the silly name, it's probably my favorite. I used to live in Boston, now I've moved west and can't get it anymore. Probably because the brewery is only 4 people. For a more nationwide selection, I'm going to say...

Paulner Oktoberfest Marzen would be my suggestion. It's mild without being boring, and full bodied without making you feel bloated after drinking a few. It's a really good session beer, plus it's usually pretty easy to find.
You said in another comment that you like citrus notes in your beer. In that case I would also suggest Magic Hat #9. It's an unusual brew with an interesting citrusy sweetness to it.

Unfortunately the piss beer is almost the only beer exported from here
Probably because we've stopped drinking it (well most of us but stereotypes exist for a reason )

P.S. My answer is already invalid, because Baby Tree doesn't come in a 6-pack, only biggish bottles.
Also, the best thing you can do is try to find the styles you like. Try lots of things. Both of my recommendations are similar in style and don't suite everyone's tastes.

I'm in Mass. My brother actually knows the guys who brew Pretty Things, funny story, they promised him a full keg of whatever beer he wanted, if and only if he could throw a party and finish it that night.

Oh yeah? Have you had Baby Tree? I've only been gone for a year but oh how I miss it.

Actually there is one now I think of it, great idea. My ex and I used to buy beer there, she's a year older, and they knew her so they never carded me.

Not a problem! A great way to find beers you like is to keep an eye out for a beer or brewers festival in your area. You'll get breweries from all over the country that will come and bring their beers for you to sample. It's a very fun way to spend a day, and you'll get to try a good number of beers you may never have ever heard of before.

Work your way through New Belgium's offerings. Fat Tire is an old favorite.

Fat Tire is an amber ale, Tank 7 is a saison/farmhouse ale.
If you like something heartier, New Belgium 1554 is also great.

It's malty and delicious and not terribly expensive. One of my favorites and available nationwide:
There are better Belgian style ales out there but this is good for a beginner.

1554 is one of my favorite. Up there with Chimay blue. So... soo.... good.
Mission Street ales are good, too.

If this is really your first beer: just get something simple, it doesn't have to be extravagant. When I turned 21 I was a broke ass college student. So while I was already a beer lover, my first purchase was a 24 of Keystone Light (which I had to buy because I lost a round of apartment complex golf).
If I could do it over again? Weihenstephaner Original, or really anything from them. The Original is probably the best lager in the world.
It is the oldest operating brewery in the world, and it is also the state brewery of Bavaria.

If you decide to venture into wines. Try B. R. Cohn. Avid car collector/restorer. Wine maker. Manager of the Doobie Brothers. Puts some of his cars and other favorites on the labels.

We tried to visit on the roadtrip to Montana a couple years back, but didn't reserve a spot far enough in advance. Will have to remedy that our next time through!

You should just admit that you will be drinking PBR for the rest of your life and submit now.

Oh, you don't have to reserve any more! Just show up in time. You may not get to ride the bike, but they'll generally let you through.

Well that would still be my recommendation since you don't really like overly hoppy beers. I love both hoppy and not hoppy beers (have a Munich Helles and a Altbier in lagering right now and the next two planned beers are imperial IPA's, one fresh hop the other black), but Weihenstephaner is still my overall favorite for it's simple yet perfect flavor.

I can recommend some good beers, but I don't think a youngun' can really appreciate a good beer until he's had shitty beer. It's like a car, in a sense. If you've always driven a new BMW, you'll never really know how good it is until you drive a shitty Honda with 4 mismatched tires, sloppy shifter, weak brakes and burning oil. And no radio.
So, first, go drink a ton of Natural Light, Keystone Light, Rainier, and other cheap shit. And I mean a TON. Like to the point where you start to wonder why anyone drinks beer at all. Then go for the good shit. I really like Leinenkugel, and their Oktoberfest beer is very smooth and tasty. I don't know why it doesn't score higher with the beer snobs. I prefer lagers and stouts; smooth and with some meat on it.

Great, thanks for the tip. This thread got way more comments than I was expecting. I think I'll have to make a list of all these recommendations, check em off one by one.

Fair enough, I feel like I've already ingested far too much cheep beer though, I'll take one for the team and keep on keepin on.
You've actually described exactly the vehicle that my brother and I shared, manual 92 Honda Accord 4dr, three of which worked. 4 mismatched tires, no stereo, terrible breaks and a shot clutch. Are you watching me?
